South African address verification: a practical guide to verifying clients

South African address verification is difficult because local data sits in separate silos, and coverage is inconsistent across public and private datasets. Verify by Tiller pulls residential address information from multiple trusted sources in a single e-IDV (electronic identity verification) check, with over 90% coverage across urban and rural regions, to the same standard required for AML compliance. This helps at onboarding and periodic review, but it really comes into its own with KYC remediation. This guide covers what you need to get started and how to approach a remediation exercise.
What you need to verify a South African resident
- For individuals: their surname and 13-digit South African ID number
There's nothing to change in your workflows or configuration.
What you get back
For each individual, Verify checks their details against the National Population Register, maintained by the Department of Home Affairs, and returns their verified residential address. Every address comes with its source and the date it was last updated, giving you a clear audit trail for each check. This is designed to meet international AML standards for residential address verification of South African residents.
Coming soon: KYB and bank account verification. Business registration checks and bank account ownership and status confirmation will extend the same approach to your business clients and their bank details. Learn more about KYB with Verify.

How to remediate your South African client book
Every customer who fails an automated check becomes a manual review or a chase for documents. Higher address coverage means far fewer of them. A practical way to approach it:
- Check your data. Make sure you hold a surname and 13-digit ID number for each individual client.
- Verify your book. Run address verification across your existing South African individual clients.
- Review the results. Use the source and last-updated date on each address to decide what falls within your risk appetite.
- Follow up the exceptions. Handle the small number of unmatched clients through your usual manual process.
The same approach works at onboarding and through ongoing monitoring. When KYB and bank account verification launch, business clients and bank details can be folded into the same exercise.

Where the South African address data comes from
- Department of Home Affairs (DHA): real-time identity anchoring and record matching against the National Population Register
- Licensed credit bureau data: financial footprints from a licensed South African credit bureau
- SACRRA member organisations: utility and financial data shared by members of the South African Credit & Risk Reporting Association
